Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground

I’ve said before that I’m a fan of the “old blues,” music from the 1920’s-1940’s. Today I had a CD playing and listened to the song that’s the title of this article. Blind Willie Johnson recorded it in 1928. Willie was a Christian blues singer. I think he recorded 25-30 songs, and each of them includes lyrics about his faith.
Ryan Pinkard, on Tidal, the music, and video streaming service, said, “If you want to hear the blues, boiled down to its absolute essence, listen to Blind Willie Johnson’s” Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground.”
In 1977, NASA launched the Voyager spacecraft and included a Voyager Golden Record that contains sounds and images showing the diversity of life and culture on Earth.
This recording is slide guitar blues, raw and gut-wrenching. All Willie’s recordings are on YouTube. I hope you enjoy this song.
