Okay, we’ve heard this before—money in our pockets. But sooner or later, political promises inevitably collide with arithmetic.

First, it was the “DOGE dividend.” The idea was that DOGE would save the federal government so much money that some of those savings could be returned to taxpayers. There was even talk of $5,000 checks. It didn’t happen.

Then came the tariff dividend. Eventually, President Trump talked about sending Americans checks of at least $2,000, paid for with tariff revenue. That didn’t happen either.

Next came healthcare. Trump proposed redirecting some federal healthcare money from insurance companies directly to eligible Americans. More recently, the administration announced $500 Obamacare refunds for nearly one million people in 30 states. So that one is partially becoming reality—but it isn’t $500 for every American, and I won’t be getting a check.

Now President Trump is promising another payout: a $5,000 “Trump dividend” for every American adult if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

Five thousand dollars is a pretty nice payout.

It’s also an enormous amount of money. Paying $5,000 to roughly 240 million American adults would cost about $1.2 trillion. Trump and Vice President Vance have suggested tariff revenue could help pay for it, but current tariff collections aren’t remotely enough to cover the entire cost.

And that’s where the arithmetic comes in.

Trump can’t simply write the checks himself. Congress would have to authorize the spending. Democrats are likely to oppose the proposal, and some Republicans are already questioning whether borrowing another trillion-plus dollars to send everyone a check makes fiscal sense.

So here we are again.

We’ve heard about DOGE checks. We’ve heard about tariff checks. We’ve heard about healthcare money. Now we’re hearing about $5,000 Trump dividend checks.

I certainly wouldn’t mind having another $5,000 in my pocket.

But so far, most of the promised money hasn’t made it there.

Will the fourth time be the charm?
